  1. Harrowing time for robbery victim

AFTER becoming a robbery victim outside her home on two occasions, Chen Lai Yee wants to see an increase in police presence in her housing area in Taman Bukit Serdang, Seri Kembangan.

The 26-year-old beautician said the two incidents happened at night after she got home from work, and both involved two individuals riding on a motorcycle and armed with a parang.

“The first incident happened in May last year. I noticed two guys on a motorcycle and only got out of my car when they passed my house.

“However, when I tried to open my house gate, they had already made a quick U-turn and pointed a parang at my neck.

“They yelled ‘Angkat wang!’ (give us money) at me and grabbed by handbag,” said Chen.

“The second incident happened about two weeks ago. I saw two guys on a motorcycle and only got out of my car when they passed my house,” said Chen.

“My younger brother was about to open the gate for me, but before we knew it, the robbers approached me and threatened me with a parang.

“This time, I threw my handbag at them because I was four months’ pregnant then and I didn’t want them to harm me. My family heard my screams and came out, but the robbers had already fled.”

Among the items she lost in both incidences were a purse with some cash, ATM cards, credit cards and a handphone.

Although she was not able to recognise the make or number plates of the motorcycles, she suspects both cases were done by the same perpetrators.

Chen lodged reports on both the thefts at the Seri Kembangan police station, but said the police had yet to take action.

She added that she was upset that there had not been any police patrol in her area since the first incident.

Seri Kembangan assemblyman Ean Yong Hian Wah said there had been many requests for police beat bases in numerous housing areas to address the increasing crime rate in Seri Kembangan.

“While the police are trying their best to ensure the safety of the residents, there is an insufficient number of personnel in their workforce,” he said.

“Meanwhile, we will continue holding meetings with the police and residents. We had one in Kampung Baru Seri Kembangan in early April, and will be having two more in Taman Universiti and Taman Sungai Besi Indah soon.”

“Selangor CPO Deputy Comm Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar was quoted earlier this year, saying that while the crime rate has reduced in general, daytime robbery has increased.

“There were 2,888 such cases in Selangor in 2008, and 4,634 in 2009, which marks a 37.6% increase,” he said.
