Grand event: Ng talking at the press conference to promote the Malaysian GP Sale Thursday.

Tourism Minster Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said the events to be held would include the Malaysia International Shoe Festival and KL Sunday 1Malaysia Family Fair at various shopping malls around the country.

She also said a Malaysian shopping taskforce would be set up as part of the plan to re-structure the Malaysian Mega Sale.

“The Malaysian Mega Sale has been on for 10 years. Now we want to move forward to structure it properly. Shopping is always structured within Tourism Malaysia,” she added.

“The ministry will look at policies and inter-agencies connectivity. For example, we will invite Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to sit on the taskforce to do city decoration,’’ she told a press conference held at the Menara Dato’ Onn at PWTC yesterday.

“According to a newspaper report, Mita wrote a letter to the ministry dated Feb 8 this year, and because they didn’t get any reply they insisted on proceeding with the lion dance show.

“I must clarify, if there is no letter, there’s no answer,” she said, adding that Mita had only sent an invitation to a press conference at Matic on Feb 11 to announce the lion dance show.

  1. Fashion community honours shoe master Jimmy Choo

KUALA LUMPUR: The fashion community paid tribute to world renowned shoemaker Datuk Jimmy Choo at the Stylo Fashion Grand Prix opening gala by honouring him as a mentor par excellence.

He received the Mercedes-Benz Stylo “Most Iconic Fashion Mentor” award from the Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Nur Zahirah.

“I feel very honoured to be given this award. I want to do more for my country as well as contribute to education and arts.

“In London, I also work with international students who train at my workshop but it is more important to help my country develop more skilled people,” he added.

Choo, who has been training students for the past 13 years, said that in the past, shoe-making masters or sifus could be quite selfish.

“They would rather not teach and transfer their skills to anyone.

“But for me, I like to teach because the better my students are, the better I am as well,” he added.

Stylo president and chief executive officer Datuk Nancy Yeoh said the award was to honour Choo, as the shoe master had always been a great mentor to many students.

She also credited him for bridging the gap between Malaysia and Britain.

“We are proud of him. Jimmy will continue to inspire students around the world,” she added.

The evening also saw the launch of the Stylo Academy.

The glitzy red carpet gala last night, called “Fashion’s Tribute to 1Malaysia”, featured some of the top local fashion designers such as Bill Keith, Datuk Tom Abang Saufi, Jendela KL and Khoon Hooi.

It also featured the debut of Kavita Sidhu’s Resort Collection.

Among those present at the gala were Mercedes-Benz chief executive officer Peter Honegg, designer Marko Mitanovski with make-up and hair stylists Issidora Petrovic and Nina Butkovich-Budden, Pavilion CEO Joyce Yap, and Star Publications (M) Bhd group managing director and chief executive officer Datin Linda Ngiam and executive director and group chief editor Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai.

  2. Shoe fest a boost for local industry

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian International Shoe Festival (MISF) will be a platform for the local shoe industry to capture a substantial share in the global market, said the Prime Minister’s wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.

She said the shoe festival, which was being held here for the first time, would also raise the profile of Malaysian footwear and enhance the country’s prominence as a shopping and fashion hub.

“This effort will not only help to further develop the manufacturing sector but elevate Malaysia as the shoe capital of the east,” she said when launching the MISF at the Putra World Trade Centre here yesterday.

Also present were Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen and internationally renowned shoe designer Datuk Jimmy Choo.

The three-day event, themed “Walking in Unity – 1Malaysia” was organised by the Tourism Ministry and Malaysian Footwear Manufac-turers Association.

Shoe-making is a thriving industry as the country has more than 1,000 footwear manufacturers which employ more than 30,000 people and generate RM1.1bil in revenue every year.

“I look forward to the day when Malaysian footwear will be a significant contributor of Malaysia’s gross national income,” Rosmah added.

Dr Ng said shopping was one of the main activities enjoyed by tourists and Malaysian-made shoes were in high demand.

“Malaysia is a leader in the Asean region with its high fashion footwear and this industry churned out an estimated RM600mil worth of exports annually to Europe, Japan, the Middle East and most Asean countries,” she said.

There are 86 exhibition booths featuring more than 100 footwear brands of which 90% are local.

  3. HK tourists awed by Malaysia

SENAI: Many tourists from Hong Kong believe that Malaysia is safe and friendly and looked forward to visiting the country again.

Student Terrence Lau, 17, said he had a wonderful vacation and was pleased that he visited Sibu Island, Malacca and Kota Tinggi.

“I especially enjoyed visiting Kota Tinggi, as I managed to see thousands of fireflies there,” he said.

Lau said that this was his first visit to Malaysia and it would leave a lasting impression on him, as the local cuisine was delicious while the locals were friendly and hospitable.

His mother, Dora Lee, in her 40s, said that the holiday was more than she had initially expected from Malaysia.

“The stay in Sibu Island was amazing.

“I went snorkelling and petted some deer,” she said, adding that she also enjoyed visiting Malacca as the city was rich in culture and heritage.

Lee hopes to come back to Malaysia again within the next two years, and wants to visit Kuala Lumpur as she has heard many interesting facts from her friends about the city.

Meanwhile, student Ko Woolly, 17, said that she loved the local cuisine here as it was spicy and colourful.

“Malaysian food is very spicy and unique.

“I enjoyed feasting on the curries and gravies,” she said, adding that this was her second visit to the country so far.

Woolly, Lee and Lau were part of a group of tourists who visited Malaysia under a special charter flight tour package offered by Option Tours and Travel Sdn Bhd and EGL Tours Ltd.

Option Tours and Travel Sdn Bhd executive director David Tham (pic) said that a total of 1,760 tourists from Hong Kong had purchased the tour package which costs RM2,500 per person.

The tourists spent a total of five days touring several states within Malaysia.

Tham explained that the travel package, which was the travel agent’s most popular, included a two-night stay in Sibu Island, one-night stay in Malacca and a day trip to Kota Tinggi to watch fireflies.

  4. Eco-tourism ranks high on Arab travel plans

DUBAI: Beyond the well-known destinations of Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Langkawi, Arab travellers appear to be keen on exploring Malaysia’s resort islands such as Redang, Perhentian and Tioman.

This was the outcome of a recent online survey, devised in a multiple-answer format, undertaken by Tourism Malaysia here.

It drew 4,172 respondents, including 3,536 United Arab Emirates (UAE) nationals, according to Mohamad Ibrahim Masri, Tourism Malaysia marketing manager for UAE, Gulf and Iran.

He said 1,471 respondents (35.25%) were in favour of island escapades, followed by vacationing at hill resorts like Genting Highlands, Fraser’s Hill and Cameron Highlands (1,139 respondents of 27.29%).

Arab tourists would also like to experience Malaysian culture as well as adventure with nature, such as those on offer in states like Sabah and Sarawak, he said.

On the type of activity they would indulge in on vacation in tropical Malaysia, 2,379 respondents (57.01%) picked ecotourism above shopping, spa and wellness programmes, diving and golfing.

Mohamad Ibrahim said: “You can see that ecotourism is high on the list, and this means enjoying nature and greenery.

“People in this part of the world live in an environment pretty much lacking in greenery, which can be found in abundance in Malaysia. So, it makes sense if they want to indulge in activities associated with nature when they go on vacation,” the tourism official explained.

Golfing garnered merely 319 positive responses of the 4,172 survey respondents.

Queried on festivals organised in Malaysia that they would likely attend, 911 respondents (21.83%) opted for the Fabulous Food 1Malaysia event, followed by Malaysia Mega Sale Carnival and Colours of Malaysia extravaganza.

A question on spending Ramadan in Malaysia was also featured in the survey.

A total of 2,663 respondents (63.82%) said they would like to experience the Ramadan night bazaar while 1,692 (40.55%) had savouring Malaysian food and delicacies in mind.
