  1. Public transport initiatives show improvement

KUALA LUMPUR: The progress on initiatives under the Urban Public Transport (UPT) NKRA is showing favourable result since its introduction.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said as at October this year, the RapidKL light rail transit (LRT) service has shown a 6.5% hike in ridership or an increase of 43.8 million passengers when compared with 41.1 million for the same period last year. This is due to the addition of 18 sets of four-car trains to the Kelana Jaya line last month.

Meanwhile, the new Bus Express Transit (BET) Rawang-Central Market route was launched on October 25.

This new route is expected to reduce travel time by 30%, Kong said. He also said 77 bus stops have been refurbished while 498 are near completion.

“As of August 2010, our report showed that we have achieved 17% of the public transport modal share, which had exceeded this year’s target of 15%.

“Under the UPT NKRA we are aiming to achieve 25% in public transport usage by the end of 2012,” said Kong.
