  1. Steady stream of visitors on first day of fair

The 34th KL MATTA Fair got off to a good start as visitors streamed into PWTC to shop for the best travel packages.

Popular holiday destinations were China, Taiwan and Hong Kong which offered attractive promotional packages.

Also attracting attention were the embassies of Iran and Ecuador which were taking part for the first time.

Embassy of Iran Second Counsellor (Economic) Behzad Khakpour said the 35 companies at the embassy’s booth offered a variety of holiday and tour packages.

“For those who enjoy the outdoors, we have ski, eco-tourism and desert-beach packages.

“Those who prefer culture and history should go for the inter-city travel packages,” he said.

He added that promotional rates begin at RM3,500 for a 5N/4D package, inclusive of a tour of two cities – Isfawan and Teheran – and accommodation in three-star hotels.

When met at the Ecuador Embassy’s booth, retired teacher Wong YL, 62, said she was planning a trip to the South American country as she had always wanted to see the giant Galapagos tortoises first-hand.

“I was told the best time to travel to Ecuador is between July and September.

“However, I already have a trip planned this year so I’m hoping for a good package at next year’s fair,” she said.

Meanwhile, Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said her ministry did not renew the licences of 160 tour operators while seven others have had their licences revoked.

“We took action after receiving complaints that they did not deliver what they promised, and the service they provided was not up to par,” she said in her speech when launching the fair.

She said the Government has made it compulsory for anyone applying for a tour operator’s licence to undergo a travel and tour management course by the ministry, while those wanting to renew must attend an enhancement course.

At the fair, Dr Ng also launched the “Interesting Cycling Routes in Pahang” and “Special Cycling Packages@Raub” tour packages which start at RM125 per pax.

“We launched the pilot project six months ago and so far the response has been encouraging. Apart from the six routes in Pahang, we also have 87 other cycling packages offered by different tour operators all over the country,” she said, adding that the cycling tours promote eco-friendly and health-conscious tourism.

  2. MATTA: Get the real deals

Shoppers looking for holidays deals at the KL MATTA Fair are advised to make sure they buy bona fide deals and that travel insurance is included in their packages.

MATTA president Datuk Mohd Khalid Harun warned consumers that there are a number of holiday packages being advertised on the Internet using the MATTA Fair logo.

“Many agents selling these MATTA Fair Special Offer’ packages online are not registered as exhibitors at the fair and are definitely not authorised by MATTA.

“Do not purchase the packages online if you know that the agents are not exhibitors at the fair.

“Also, keep in mind that MATTA has made it compulsory for our member agencies to offer travel insurance,” he said at a pre-event press conference yesterday.

Khalid added that the latest fair would see more foreign National Tourist Offices (NTO) promoting their respective countries.

“There will be 23 NTOs at this fair, with Iran and Ecuador coming in as first-time exhibitors,” he said.

The KL MATTA Fair will be held from today until Sunday at the Putra World Trade Centre.

It is open from 10am to 9pm and will be launched by Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen.

There are 1,008 exhibition booths by various tour and travel agents, NTOs, hotels and resorts, and airlines.

Meanwhile, the Ecuador NTO is offering attractive holiday packages to the South American country at its booth.

This includes a 12-day tour of the country priced at RM16,488.

The tour includes visits to the Unesco World Heritage city of Quito, a chance to see giant Galapagos tortoises and blue-footed Booby birds, as well as a trip along the Pan-American highway to see the Cotopaxi volcano.

  4. MATTA Fair visitors rewarded for buying travel package deals

THE nervous excitement of the contestants of the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) Fair buyers contest was palpable during the prize presentation ceremony at Kuala Lumpur Tower recently.

When 43-year old Hiew Hock Kee picked up the last of three envelopes containing the three top prizes during the lucky draw, the last thing he was expecting was to walk away with RM20,000 in travel vouchers.

He jumped for joy after opening the lucky envelope and finding out that he had won the grand prize.

“I haven’t decided yet where I want to go as I did not expect to win the grand prize at all,” said Hiew who bought a 5D/4N trip to Bali for four during the recent MATTA Fair.

Other winners of the main draw walked away with various airline tickets, holiday and tour package deals to Manila, Bandung, Macau, Sydney and Europe, among others.

For domestic draw winner Azumi Sahemelay, 42, he was perplexed when he read the little piece of paper he had retrieved after having to burst a balloon stating “Thank you for participating”.

“I was concerned that there had been a mix-up with the prizes as everyone else around me received a prize,” he said.

He was all smiles however, when he was called up on stage a few moments later to receive the grand prize of RM5,000 in travel vouchers.

“I am very happy as this is the first time I had won something after joining a contest. I might use the travel voucher during the school holidays or sometime next year,” he said.

He had bought travel package deals to Legoland Malaysia and Universal Studios Singapore for his family during the recent MATTA Fair.

Among the other domestic prizes include airline tickets to Singapore, Medan and Batam.

Etihad Airways also presented prizes for their own buyers contest as well.

MATTA Fair September 2012 organising chairman Jeffri Sulaiman said the forms submitted for the contest totalled 21,604 for the three days.

“We also had a visitor turnout of 90,263 during the three-day fair and generated about RM120mil in sales,” he said.

The next MATTA Fair will be held from March 15 to 17, 2013 at the Putra World Trade Centre
