Bank Negara Malaysia to Issue New Banknotes and Coins by 2012

With the Chinese New Year coming in about a month, most people will be very excited in receiving and getting  the new currency notes.

However the bad news is Bank Negara Malaysia only going to unveil the new fourth series banknotes design in the third quarter of 2011.

Bank Negara Malaysia will introduce a new series of banknotes for five denominations, including the re-introduction of the RM20 note and coins in three denominations.

The new fourth series design of banknotes will  in the denomination of RM1, RM5, RM10, RM20 and RM100. This not a new exercise as it was done periodically for every twelve years.

The theme of the design of the new currency series will include features that are distinctively Malaysia such as Sarawakian hornbills, Sabah’s Mout Kinabalu and Sarawak’s Mulu National Park Pinnacle rock formations.

All the denominations retain the portrait of the first Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Rahman ibni Tuanku Muhammad, the bunga raya and songket patterns.

New series of Malaysian banknotes revealed: Distinctively Malaysia

Bank Negara Malaysia revealed the new series of Malaysian banknotes today, Wednesday 21 December 2011. The new series draws its inspiration from the distinctive features of Malaysia, incorporating elements of the country’s natural treasures, culture and heritage. Themed ‘Distinctively Malaysia’, the banknotes features traditional expressions in the art and craft, natural wonders, flora and fauna and the economy.

The banknotes issued are in the denominations of RM1, RM5, RM10, RM20 and RM100. Commemorative sets are on sale starting today, Thursday 22 December 2012

The new series of Malaysian banknotes  will also have enhanced security elements in line with the latest advancements in technology. It  was launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak yesterday.

We will going to have a new fourth series design of banknotes in the denomination of RM1, RM5, RM10, RM20 and RM100.

The new design coins are the third in the series for the denominations of 5 sen, 10 sen, 20 sen and 50 sen. This new series of banknotes and coins will co-circulate with the existing series.

The current design of the RM50 banknote already in circulation since December 2007 to commemorate Malaysia’s 50th Anniversary of Independence will continue to remain in circulation.

All the financial institutions, businesses and cash handling vendors will be given a six months time to calibrate their machines to ensure the general public able to use of the new currency on it.

Bank Negara Malaysia is issuing commemorative notes to mark the introduction of the new series and to increase public awareness,  which was available for sales today.

The commemorative banknote sets will be priced at RM15 (RM1 and RM5 denomination), RM30 (RM20 denomination) and RM300 (RM1, RM5, RM10, RM20, RM50 and RM100 denominations).

It can be purchased at  Bank Negara Malaysia’s headquarters and branches in Penang, Johor Bahru, Kuala Terengganu, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu.
